  • Another name is added to the national transplant waiting list every 10 minutes.
  • On average, 22 people die every day from the lack of available organs for transplant.
  • 8,000 deaths occur every year in the U.S. because organs are not donated on time.
  • One deceased donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and can save and enhance more than 100 lives through the lifesaving and healing gift of tissue donation.
  • Organ recipients are selected based primarily on medical need, location and compatibility.
  • 82% of patients waiting are in need of a kidney.

Individuals in their 80s and 90s have successfully donated organs including liver and kidneys to save the lives of others. People of any age wishing to become organ tissue donors should inform their families that they wish to donate.

HEALTH DISPARITIES IN KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS

Greater than 50% of patients awaiting kidney transplantation in the United States are ethnic minorities with African Americans constituting 33% of those on the waiting list.

WHY MINORITIES NEED TO BE CONCERNED

A growing number of minorities are awaiting transplants throughout the United States. Certain diseases of the kidney, heart, lung, liver and pancreas are prevalent in minority communities. Many of these diseases may be treated through transplantation.
